Unemployment

Sir, — The reported remarks of the director of the Employers’ Federation on unemployment and the rate of unemployment benefits (November 1) are appalling and a gross misrepresentation of both the needs of the unemployed and the causes of unemployment. Fifty thousand New Zealanders (officially) are unemployed because there is no work available for them, not because they cannot be bothered working (as Mr Rowe implies). The benefit is intended to allow those who cannot get work at least to have some income to meet their needs and those of their families, and it does not do this if there are young children. Perhaps Mr Rowe would like to live on the unemployment benefit for a few months and experience the humiliation of being told. . “Sorry, no work." — Yours, etc., M. A. O'BRIEN. November 5, 1978.
