Soldier remanded on firearm charge

A soldier charged with discharging a 12-gauge shotgun hear a house in Barbadoes Street on Saturday was remanded without plea to November 15 when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Mr P. J. McAloon, S.M. He is Raymond Vi if cent Croxon, aged 19, who also faced a charge of carrying the shotgun except for a lawful and proper purpose. This offence also occurred allegedly on Saturday. The Magistrate granted Croxon bail of $750 with a surety bf the same amount. Although bail was not opposed by Sergeant M. P. Caldwell a “substantial” surety was sought. FALSE-PRETENCE CHARGE Peter Patrick Quinn, aged 63, retired, was remanded on bail to November 14 without plea on a charge of false pretence involving almost $4OOO. It is alleged that between February; 1975, and June, 1977, with intent to defraud he obtained $3980.90 from

the Department of Social Welfare by falsely representing that he was Paul QuinnSmith. Bail was opposed by Sergeant Caldwell. ASSAULT ALLEGED On a charge of assaulting James McPhee' on Saturday, Colin Bertrand Clydesdale, a kitchen hand, aged 26, was remanded in custody to November 13. Clydesdale is also charged that he assaulted Mr McPhee with intent to injure him. Both alleged offences occurred in Christchurch on Saturday. No pleas were entered. CANNABIS CULTIVATED The discovery of 68 cannabis plants in . his back garden resulted in David Tony Sullivan’s being convicted and fined $3OO. Sullivan, aged 21, unemployed, admitted the offence which occurred on October 28. Sergeant Caldwell said when the police searched the defendant’s address they had found 68 cannabis plants at

varying stages of growth. Sullivan had said they belonged to him and another person and that they were for their own use. Sergeant Caldwell said the other person would be appearing before the Court. Counsel (Mr A. K. Grant) said that when they had planted the. cannabis neither man knew how many of the plants would come to fruition. He had been instructed that the plants were for the use of the defendant and his associate. In fining Sullivan the | Magistrate said 68 was not a small number of prohibited plants to be cultivating. RECEIVING ALLEGED No plea was entered by a sales representative charged with receiving one roll of Axminster carpet, valued at $1496. Wendy Louise Hogan, aged 23, who is alleged to have committed the offence on or about July 28, was remanded on bail of $560 with a surety of the same amount, to November 13.
