Strike is limited
The strike by cleaners, caretakers and security officers planned for 24 hours, from midnight next Sunday, will affect only the Christchurch area among South Island centres. The secretary of the Canterbury Cleaners and Caretakers Union (Mr G. Cumming: said yesterday that if nothing concrete was achieved after the strike by Christchurch union members, meetings would be held at Ashburton, Tlmaru, Marlborough, and Westland to consider strike action in those areas. The strike, by cleaners in several centres throughout the (country other than Auckland, is over the refusal of the employers’ assessors to meet in conciliation. The union says the employers refused to negotiate because they wanted to sate paying increased wages for several months, while the employers say they refused because they I wanted Auckland included in a
national document. The Auckland union has withdrawn from the Cleaners, Caretakers and Security Officers Federation and has filed separate award claims
