Waitaki water control
Geraldine correspondent I The Waitaki Catchment (ommissiop could become the first catchment authority in New Zealand to control navigable waters, under the Harbours Act, if its application to the Ministry of Transport is successful. The commission has told the Mackenzie County Council I hat it has applied formally to -the Ministry for a Harbours Act grant of control of the navigable waters in the upper Waitaki lakes and rivers. ,1 The navigable waters, for which control is sought, include takes Tekapo, Pukaki.
iOhau, Benmore, Aviemore. and Waitaki, and the rivers! running into and out of these! lakes, and also the lower; Waitaki River and its tribu-; taries between the Waitaki dam and the sea. The catchment commission! also wants full voting mem-! bership of any authority sen up to administer recreation! . and reserve areas on the' Waitaki, but said it re-! garded the shoreline counties as the rightful agencies 'to ] administer the reserves. ! r 'The Mackenzie council’s discussion on the commis-i ;sion’s letter was taken in! committee.
