‘N.Y. Tinies’ staff in strike
NZPA-Reuter New York "New York Times” editors! staff have gone on strike, threatening a further extension of the 87-day shut-down of the city's two main dailies.
The action came onh days]! after the first big break-J through in the shut-down, which began on August 9. 1 The New York Newspaper , Guild said that the “New i York Times” editorial staff had gone on strike over fail- ‘ ure to reach a new contract' to replace one that expired' last March 30. Negotiations were contin-'j uing, a guild spokesman told NZPA-Reuter and the issues' are “entirely separate” from;! those that closed the papers nearly three months ago. I. The strike came as the “New York Times” and then “New York Daily News”? were preparing for papers toj hit the stands again early this week. ; A big barrier was lifted; last Wednesday when a tentative six-year" contract was reached with the 3100-mem-her Printing Pressmen’s Union. The union is scheduled to meet today to vote on the agreement. The Delivery Drivers’ Union reached tentative agreement on Saturday on their contract, which also expired on March 31.
