Big 'quake in Pacific
NZPA-Reuter Honolulu A severe earthquake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter Scale, hit east of the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific yesterday, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre reports. No Pacific-wide tidal wave was generated by the earthquake, which occurred at 12.30 Honolulu time (1.30 p.m., N.Z. time.) about 480 km east of the island of ! Guadacanal. ! There were no reports of damage or injuries. ! The Solomon Islands, which lie about 1830 km ! north-east of Australia, were formerly a trust territory |of that country before [becoming independent m 1976. The Richter Scale is a measure of ground motion as recorded on seismographs.
Every increase in one number means a tenfold increase in magnitude. Thus, a reading of 7.5 reflects an earthquake 10 times stronger than one of 6.5.
