Fire threat to many houses
PA Wellington Flames came within metres of houses in Naenae, Wellington, on Saturday evening as a big gorse fire, which may have been started by fireworks, swept through more than 60ha of land. The fire was still burning last evening. A Lower Hutt Fire Brigade spokesman said that the cause of the fire had not yet been established. but it was possible that fireworks were to blame. Two helicopters worked for almost 12 hours relaying monsoon buckets of water to burning patches on three hill ridges. The fire spread on to the hill tops, making it impossible to get at. The wind changed during the night. ■ and snread flames south : towards more Naenae houses. A wall of flames came within about 1100 m of wooden houses and garages in one street. A total of 21 mostly minor fires were reported in Naenae and Wellington during the Guy Fawke’s celebrations.
