Good 5000M by Grieg

A convincing senior IWOOm win by the New Brighton distance runner, Don Grieg, was among the outstanding performances on the first day of the Canterbury A.N.Z. Bank track and field league at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturdav. His time of 14min 24.95ec was a modest one by national standards but the cald, bluster; conditions were a severe handicap. The manner in which he dictated terms, almost from the outset, was impressive. Gneg swept into the lead on the second lap and was going away ct the finish. , The only other competitor! who appeared capable of matching him at any stage was the New Brighton marathon specialist, Mai Radcliffe. He ran at Griegs heels for much of the distance but was unable to respond when the leader started to pull away six laps from the end. Radcliffe ran on strongly to finish second in 14min; 33.8 sec. Their joint contribution to) New Brighton's points tallyhelped to keep the club within challenging distance 1 of the other four clubs in the major league. However. New Brighton made little progress after this and it will need a strong effort next Saturday on the final day of the league if it is not to finish last. Old Boys-Te Kura, the winner for the last two seasons, held a narrow lead over Toe H at the end of Saturday’s competition. They might have been in a rather more comfortable position if the points from the senior men's 4 x 400 m relax had been part of the league.

The club took the first three places, although it drew some criticism for not putting greater effort into the race. The three Old Bovs teams were the only entrants. Points; Major league: Old Boys 77, Toe II 72, Technical 60. New Brighton 49. Minor league: Cashmere Ililirnorton 67. University 31, Christ’s College 9. Christchurch 7, Kaiapot 6. St Bede’s College 5, Papa nui-Red wood 5. As always. Old Boys dominated the short sprints, winning ail three placings in both the senior men's 60m and 200 m. Andy von Biel won the 60m dash in a smart 6.8 s from Jeff Bailey and a newcomer to the sprinting scene this •summer, Steve Weltord. Bailey, running very freely, won tb.e 20Um in the good time ol 22.55. Well ord. a soccer player with just two weeks or sprint training behind him. pushed von Biel back into third place with a strong run. He recorded 22.-s. The New Zealand 40Um inn dies champion. David Long (Old Boys), of Achilles-tendon troubles but the club gained the winning points in this event from the : New Zealand high jump chain pion, Terry Lomax, who ran thfe : distance on his own To record In the absence of Be\ Paterson (Technical), Jbanna Burr | (Technical) dominated the women’s sprints. She won the i 60m in Bs, a time she shared (with the second place-getter, j Karen Forbes (Ohl Boys,. The ; placings over 200 m were the same ' but Burr won by a much more ! comfortable margin in that race in 275. Louis? Somerville (Universitytriumphed in her struggle, with ; her University club-mate, Wendy : Mollison, in the women’s 800 m. Somerville used her slightly jstronger finish to win in 2m in 235. Mollison finished two fifths , of a second later. The former Commonwealth Games representative, Sally Mene i {Technical). surprised her rivals by turning up at the circle lor ■ the women's discus after several years away from the spoil, caring . for her young family. In a stand-

ing throw she recorded 37.3mj to gam third place, a great effort considering she had done no training. Geraldine Brooks (Toe H won the event with a fine throw of 40.12 m in her second attempt. Vick\ Phillips Technical was the runner-up with a best throw of 38.2 m. It was an interesting contest but it paled, somewhat, in com parison „u the senior men's shot, the outcome of which was in doubt until the final round. Tile former New Zealand decathlon champion. Mene Mene (Technical), won tire event with his best throw of 13.03 m. Until then. Mart Leech {Technical.?, had seemed the likely winner. He Jed the contest for the first two rounds. Mene took the lead in the third round with a throw of 12,67 m only to lose it again in the next round when Leech recorded 12.82 m. Leech threw first in the final* round and again recorded 12.82 m. It seemed good enough for a win. but Mene. calling on hid den reserves, tossed the heavy metal ball 21cm further to snatch Mene was again a prominent, .performer in the senior javelin, 'although this time he had to concede first place to Murray Stewart {Toe lb, who recorded a fine throw of 59 24m Mene s [best was 52.14 m. The outstanding performance! in the junior ranks was the 1500 m run by a Technical athlete. ;Michaei Gilchrist, aged 18. lie ran away from the opposition to win. in 3min 57.75, a time faster than' i the senior 1500 m winning time • at the New Brighton jubilee • meeting a week* earlier.
