Strike planned alter vote
About 850 members of the New Zealand Caretakers, Cleaners. and Security Officers’ Federation in Canterbury, Westland. and Marlborough plan to strike from midnight on November 13 to midnight on November 14. in protest against employers’ alleged reluctance to enter into wage negotiations. About 300 members voted in a two-thirds majority to strike at a meeting held in Christchurch yesterday morning, according to the branch secretary (Mr G. Cumming). The attendance at the
meeting was the biggest in the union’s history , he said, ano was in protest against the employers’ “not turning up for the negoti ations.” However, they had accepted documents submitted by the union Security guards, watchmen. caretakers, and cleaners will be affected if the strike goes ahead. The action is confined to the Canterbury-Westland-Marlborough region, but Mr Cumming said that meetings would be held in Dunedin and Southland this week; he said the dispute might expand to Wellington
