Heidsiek top prospect at Stratford today

Special correspondent New Plymouth On his way to winning the 1975 and 1977 New Zealand Cups Heidsieck scored in the feature handicap at the Stratford Racing Clubs spring meeting, in the same year. Heidsieck will attempt the first leg of a similar double when he contests the Wes: Derby Stud Handicap at Stretford today. Heidsieck was in the ca'e of the Matangi trainer, F. Phillips, when he won his New Zealand Cups but the Hermes eight-year-od is now with the Hawera trainer, B. Deacon. Deacon said yesterday ; that Heidsieck was likely to race today and at the Rangitikei meeting on Saturday before heading south for another tilt at the Riccarton feature. Victory for Heidsieck m what is the first leg of the T.A.B. double looks a distinct possibility. The gelding showed unexpected dash iwhen he raced i.i the J. J. Barry Challenge Cup on his home track last Wednesday and not surprisingly drifted out over the final bit. He is likely to drift further back today and' then produce his well-known finish up the testing Stratford straight. The likely dangers to Heidsieck are well hidden and as a result betting will be fairly even among the remainder. If Heidsieck wins the first leg Deacon will be fairly

confident of completing the double with Chateau Bleau. Chateau Bleau did not get the best of runs in the straight last week when she beat all but her stablemate Madame Mink. The run is bound to have improved nei and she looks a fine chance. Supreme Boy hinted at an early win with a sound run at Hawera last week while Regrey has performed well in a busy programme over the last couple of weeks. His strong finish to beat all but Regal Band in the weight-for-age event at Hawera was !a bold trial by a horse ; which already has winning iform on his home circuit.
