Food prices rise
About 280 grocery items rose in price last month, according to the Wellington branch of the Campaign Against Rising Prices.
This had brought the total number of grocery price rises this year to about 1520, said the secretary of the branch (Mrs C. Kelly). Some loaves of bread had increased in price twice this year, including wrapped sandwich loaves, which had gone up by 113 per cent since November, 1975, and Vienna loaves, which had gone up by 112 per cent in that time, said Mrs Kelly.
Among the bigger increases last month were 255 g packets of plain
Farex, up 36 per cent; 28ml bottles of Greggs essences, up 33 per cent; 12oz tins of Hellaby’s lamb tongues, up 28 per cent; and packets of Rotafoil, up 21 per cent. Crown corned beef rose in price by 20 per cent, 350 g packets of Betty Crocker cake mix went up by 15 per cent, Greggs instant puddings went up by 13 per cent, and 500 g packets of Complan and 525 g jars of Swarfega went up by 10 per cent. Some items which have risen in price twice this year include Hellaby’s corned beef, short Tek toothbrushes, 250 g packets of Skippy cornflakes, 255 g packets of plain Farex and Stockpdt.
