Plane ditches A day-long search by aircraft and ships has failed to find the missing Islander aircraft of the Solair Company which went down in the sea off the Solomon Island of Guadalcanal in stormy weather on Sunday. The twin-engine Islander, with a pilot from Queensland and ten passer -?rs on board, was on a routine flight between the islands of Rennell and Bellona when it ditched in the sea, apparently after running out or fuel in rough weather. — Honiara.

Reshuffle denial Reports of a forthcoming Cabinet reshuffle in Britain have been dismissed authoritatively as purely speculative and without substance. The Leader of the House of Commons (Mr Michael Foot) is understood to be highly amused at suggestions that he is being allocated the job of supervising the Scottish and Welsh devolution referendums. With the likelihood of these polls being held in February, this task is likely to be very short lived. — London. Actor found dead The Academy Award-win-ning actor, Gig Young, aged 60, has been found shot dead in his New York apartment alongside the German-born Australian actress, Kim Schmidt, his bride of three weeks. Both had gunshot wounds in the head. The police said that the actor apparently shot Miss Schmidt, who was 31, before turning the pistol on himself. — New York. Cutter sinks

A second body was found and hopes dimmed for nine other missing crewmen yesterday as United States Navy and Coast Guard divers penetrated the gash-ed-in hull of a Coast Guard cutter which collided with a freighter and sank in the Chesapeake Bay, off Maryland. One of the two unidentified bodies was recovered from the bay bottom just outside the 51-year-old Cuyahoga, the sunken training ship. — Washington.

Fighting ‘goes on’ Phnom Penh radio has said that despite heavy losses Vietnamese troops are continuing attacks inside Cambodian territory. The radio said that in the period from September 1 to October 20 a total of 950 Vietnamese troops had been killed and four tanks and other arms destroyed. It said that Vietnam "supported by its boss, Russia, had infiltrated Ikm to 3km along national route seven in eastern Cambodia. — Bangkok.

Millionaire dies A Canadian millionaire, Garfield Weston, who turned his father’s Toronto bakery into a huge industrial empire, has died. He was 81. Mr Weston, building on only a high school education, created Garfield Weston Holdings, Ltd, with interests in bakeries, supermarket chains, department stores, canneries, lumber mills, and gold mines. A Right-wing philanthropist, he moved to Britain in 1934 to further his business interests. In 1939, he was elected a Conservative member of Parliament, holding his English Midlands seat at Macclesfield until 1945.—Toronto.
