Sea freight rate rise

Auckland Several major shipping lines serving New Zealand have announced increases in their freight charges. Lines running between New Zealand and the east coast of North America and the United States gulf ports — Columbus Line, Farrell Lines, and Pace

Line — will increase cargo rates by 3.5 per cent. On top of the present rates a currency adjustment factor of 7.14 per cent will be imposed. The Columbus and Farre! Lines, with Blue Star Line, also serve the West Coast of North America and Hawaii. Rates to those places will rise by

3.5 per cent but the currency adjustment factor will be 5 per cent. The new rates will come into force on January 1 and will apply to all refrigerated, wool, and general cargo from this country. “Continuing escalation of costs” is the lines’ explanation for the rises.
