Country award to young singer
PA Tauranga It was a case of second time lucky for a Napier country singer, Lynne Toner, aged 16, when she won the New Zealand Star Award in Tauranga on Sunday evening. Last year, she was runnerup for the award, which is run by the Tauranga Country Music Club. As part of her first prize she will go to the United States for 18 days in June, six days being spent at Nashville. Miss Toner combined with! her sister, Celine, to win the duo, and her father led a family group, Haystack, which won the group section. Miss Toner has been sing-
ing since the family came to New Zealand from Glasgow four years ago. The award convener, Mr Ivan Lea, said that the week-end was very successful, with 205 musicians auditioning for the two public concerts. Results: Star award, Lynne Toner (Napier); first runner-up, Janice Ramage (Tauranga); second runnerup, Noel Burns (Timaru). Junior: Wendy Young and Tania Rae (Oropi): Original song, Kerrie Beaston (Eastern Districts, Auckland). Duo, Lynne and Celine Toner. Instrumental. Kevin Coleman (Eastern Districts).
