L. Park not troubled

Lancaster Park served notice that it will not easily be relieved of the A.N.Z. Bank knock-out cricket title when it decisively beat the Canterbury Cricket Supporters Club XI in the opening rouind yesterday. After scoring 222 for six wickets from its 35 overs, Park brought an early end to a chilly afternoon at Lancaster Park South by dismissing its opponent for a mere 43.

The positive instincts of Tony Collins were much in evidence as he shared partnerships of 52 with Dave Dempsey and 91 with Michael Johnston for the first two wickets. Collins reached his half-century with the second of his two sixes and was at the crease for 105 min for his 78 runs. When Collins was dismissed, Johnston assumed

the role of senior partner and he had seven fours and one six in his unbeaten 75. There was some strong hitting from the middle-order batsmen as Park’s allotment of overs began to run out, the slow outfield failing to stem the momentum. Only Howard Chellew (20) offered much resistance to the capable Park bowling attack. Wayne Wilson, Kit Chambers, Andrew Nuttall and Bruce Irving, who had just the one over, claimed two wickets each as the last seven supporters batsmen fell for nine runs. The other first-round fixtures, between High School Old Boys and Marist and Burnside-West-Univer-sity and Riccarton, were postponed because of the unplayable ground conditions at Hagley Oval.

Lancaster Park 222/6 (A. Collins 78, M. Johnston 75 not out; R. Fuller 3/39, B. Butler 2/24) beat Supporters 43 (H. Chellew 20; W. Wilson 2/16, K. Chambers 2/8, A. Nuttall 2/3, B. Irving 2/0). Golf.— Donna Young (United States shot a 69 to ease out Alexandra Reinhardt and win the SUSSO.OOO Houston Exchange Club golf classic at Crosby, Texas.
