Less for works

Christchurch City Council departments will reduce their spending to save money for paying higher-than-expected salaries. In addition to almost a year’s back pay for council employees, the council and other local bodies also face higher salaries for top executives. From April 1, the Higher Salaries Commission has set maximum salaries for four City Council

officers, including $29,500 for the Town Clerk and $25,665 for the city engineer. Waimairi County's two top executives have a new maximum of $23,390. The Lyttelton Harbour Board manager has a $25,060 maximum. Councils have traditionally paid the full amount set by the commission. Seven City Council emplcryees now receive more than $20,000 a year.
