Teeming rain stops Rangiora show

For th* first time in its 12-year history the North-i sm Agricultural and Pastoral Show was cancelled on Sat--1 relay. Teeming south-westerlv •ain on Friday and Saturday reduced the Rangiora showtrounds to a mire. By mid homing on Saturday condia'ons had become impossible •nd the show had to be stopped.

The earlv closing of the show means that tne North-i ;m Agricultural and Pastoral Association stands to suffer a big loss from the event. Gate takings reached only $533 compared with the record $4047 taken at last year’s show. Although the cancellation meant the grand parade was not held for the first time in the history of the show, most of the judging was completed. Shearing competitions were transferred to a Femside woolshed and the highland dancing competitions were held at the Rangiora High School. The only horse and ponv jumping that took place was held on Friday before the ground conditions became too mucky. All other jumping has been postponed and will he held at the showgrounds on November 4. The Labour Day jumping show organised by the Canterbury area of the New Zealand Horse Society junior committee has been cancelled because of ground conditions. The only event to take place in the show ring after the cancellation of the show was the judging of the Clydesdale horses and the final of the dog trials. Side show attendants reported miserable takings and many had packed up to leave shortly after lunch. Displays and tents were hastily dismantled by attendant's and the grounds were almost emptv bv about 2 p.m. Many vehicles had trouble getting out of the muddy showgrounds. The president of the association. Mr A. T. Metherell, brought his tractor to the show to help horse owners who were unable to tow their horse floats through the mud. Mr Metherell said he was worried that stock might suffer if the show continued.

He praised the work of thei organisers who tried to keep' the show going in spite of; the weather. “I would like to extend a big thank you to those who? fought the elements to get! as far as we did. However, they were terrible conditions for animals and it was with regret that we had to cancel the show.” said Mr Metherell.
