“Public tolerance” of homosexuality
Sir, — In reply to J. Chetwynd’s letter (October 21) “sodomy” is indeed a Biblical term. To quote the Oxford Dictionary: “sodomy n. Unnatural sexual intercourse especially between males; sodomite n. person practising this. “Sodom,” Genesis 19, v 5: “And they called unto Lot and said ur.to him, where are the men which came into thee this night? ..Bring them out unto us that we may know them.” In scripture “know” clearly refers to sexual intercourse. Genesis 4, vl: “And Adam knew Eve his wife and she conceived and bore Cain.” Homosexual lust so possessed the men of Sodom that they refused Lot’s n ffer of his daughters and nearb broke his door in demanding his male guests. True “love” comes from God and cannot be used to describe an activity which is an abomination to him. (Leviticus 18 v. 22). — Yours,
H. and J. NIHONIHO. October 21, 1978.
Sir, — Homosexual behaviour harms society and the individuals concerned. I do not judge the individual for hi" perverted behaviour in private, but the illegal public behaviour of those who call themselves homosexual or gay does concern us, and, L m this correspondence, there emerges the syndrome of the individual pervert who insults and abuses me because I express my opinion from my experience. “Oscar Wilde is liable to be his patron saint” says my social psychology textbook, speaking of the personality of the orthodox, “often quite distinctive,” ’ male homosexual. I respect Oscar Wilde’s literary genius, but he brought about his own downfall by litigation against one who resented his continual sneering at the then accepted social standards. With few standards left, the media accepts the modern cult and censors those who oppose it, for threatened physical reprisals fit the language of those
who suffer acute personal injury merely from differing opinions. — Yours, etc.,
VARIAN J. WILSON. October 19, 1978.
