NZPA Melbourne Crashes involving one New Zealand rider and two Victorians marred the second day of the nine-dav 1900 km Sun cycling tour of Victoria yesterday. Russell Nant, 25. of Christchurch. crashed on a timber bridge after Sale, breaking two bars in his bike. He grabbed a spare bike, caught the field, and won the next two sprints. Nant is eighth, 50sec behind the leader. The 1976 winner, Peter Besanko, 24. also crashed near Sale, injuring his wrist and sustaining bruises to his hip and back. He continued in the race and is still lying third. 20sec behind the race leader, Terry Hammond (Victoria), after finishing sixth in the afternoon stage.

Traralgon’s Graham Rowley, who crashed over Besanko. suffered a badly gashed elbow but recovered to finish with the main group and maintained his fourth position over-all, just 23sec behind Hammond. Another New Zealand rider, Wayne Hildred. from Taranaki, a last-minute inclusion in the tour, failed by only a wheel to [win the afternoon stage from [Sale to Bairnsdaie.
