Aust. girls to get N.Z. jobs
The Tourist Hotel’ Corporation has offered jobs to 20 Australian girls in its New Zealand chain, for a contract period of 12 months. The appointments have been offered to the Australians in spite of a publicity campaign last month in New [Zealand, to recruit New Zealanders.
'The corporation’s assistant personnel officer (Miss S. L. Frame) said that of the 80 positions in corporation hotels throughout New Zealand, 40 had been filled after interviews in Auckland and Christchurch. The remaining places would become available between now and Christmas, said Miss Frame.
Miss Frame spent three days and a half in Christchurch, interviewing 59 ap-
plicants. Miss Frame said that 70 interview appointments were made. She said that a “good percentage” of those interviewed had been offered jobs and a number of applicants had been asked to stand by on a waiting list to fill vacancies as they arose. “Under the Hotel Workers’ Award, employees are required to give only two days notice, making it difficult for hotels to plan their [recruitment needs,” said Miss Frame.
The Corporation did not advertise in Australia this year, said Miss Frame. The jobs offered to the Australian girls would begin in late December and early January. The girls were required to pay their own fares and • ravel at a time convenient to the corporation.
