Waitaki Valley

Sir, — The horrific details of the floods in Kelso tended to overshadow the Hakataramea discussion on the “Dateline” TV programme last night. While not wanting to detract from the plight of the devastated Clutha plains, the devastation at Kurow was no less real. Thirty years of resting on the nromises of successive Governments were washed dowm the Waitaki River in a dam burst of failure. For decades now, Governments have found money to exploit the hydro power resources of the Waitaki river. This spending has always by-passed the local

villages in the long run. At last there was an opportunity to do some good in the valley that would have long term benefit to the people who live there. For financial considerations it was turned down. Mr Elworthy made interesting viewing. Not once did he speak up for the viewpoint of the people of his electorate most effected by the decision. Rather he mumbled on about responsible Government and the Treasury. — Yours, etc.,

F. W. McCLIMONT. October 17, 1978.
