Appeal for collectors
More collectors are needed by the Christchurch City Council for the street appeal in Christchurch and its suburbs from 8 a.m. on Friday to raise money to help people who suffered uninsurable losses in the Otago and Southland floods. Service clubs, St Margaret’s College, the Christchurch Sea Cadets, and many other citizens have so far offered to collect. Anyone willing to collect should telephone the Associate Town Clerk, Mr M. W. Atkinson, at 791-660. By late yesterday, more than $5830 had been collected at the council’s offices and the Municipal Electricity Department, and the appeal being run by Radio 3ZB had brought in gifts and pledges totalling considerably more than
$lO,OOO — not counting $2500 given bv the Canterbury Savings Bank. throughout the city, many shops and dairies are also running their own appeals. The Christchurch City Council office will be the base for the appeal on Friday.
This resolution from the Canterbury - West land branch or the New Zealand Journalists' Union yesterday was submitted to “The Press" last evening: "The branch expresses its concern about the extent of today's front page lead story in ‘The Press' on flood relief. The branch advises that tomorrow's story on the same subject should be limited to three paragraphs, as in today's 'Christchurch Star’.”
