Cheap liquor ‘a thing of past’

PA Nelson Cheap liquor is almost certainly a thing of the past in New Zealand, according to the director of the New Zealand Liquor Industry Council (Mr J. W. Thompson). Mr Thompson said in Nelson that New Zealand’s liquor prices were quite expensive, about nineteenth in the world, but he could not see “cheap liquor” becoming a part of New Zealand life. “Our prices are still a lot cheaper than Australia’s. There have been ef-

forts to ensure that liquor is not so available that it produces excessive abuse.” This principle was reiterated in cigarette taxation, and the trend would not be reversed. “The cost of running the liquor industry will make it impossible to lower the price.” Commenting on ancillary licences, Mr Thompson said that it was a principle accepted by the industry even before the Royal Commission had been established, and it had not been opposed.
