Richards wins again

NZPA Surfers Paradise The expatriate New Zealand racing car driver Jim Richards staged a neck-and-neck battle with Melbourne’s Bob Jane to win the Gold Coast Cup at the International Raceway at Surfers on Sunday. Both drivers continually swapped the lead In the first heat over 12 laps until Jane was forced to slow down because of a broken water pump belt in his car’s motor. Richards and Jane gave a repeat performance over the second 12 laps until Jane’s Keiber Monaro was put out of the race with the same overheating problem. Richards, in a Falcon hardtop,

went on to score ■ comfortable win. In the single-seater race Brlsbane’s Terry Hook had a David and Goliath struggle with two top Sydney drivers. John Smith and Andrew Miedocke. Hook, with an enormous power advantage from his 500 cu. cm Lola, pulled away in the long straights, but was quickly caught on the tighter sections of the 3.2 km circuit by the Sydney drivers, both in 1600 cu. cm Formula Pacific cars. Miedecke crossed the line first but was put back to sixth place after being penalised one minute for jumping the start.

This gave Hook a narrow win over Smith.
