The British rally champion, Russell Brookes, came away from a private testing session delighted with the performance of the Masport Escort RS 1800 he will drive in the 1978 Motogard Rally, which starts in Auckland on Saturday.

The session was organised by the Masport team on a private forest road at Riverhead, north of Auckland, to allow Brookes to try out his car and to establish whether modifications were necessary. Brookes made eight passes over the skm forest road at speeds approaching 160 km/h. “I am very happy with the car — it’s every bit as good as the Escort I drive in Britain,” said Brookes. Brookes was also impressed with his first introduction to New Zealand forestry roads. “The road was very smooth,” he said. “If it is representative of what we shall have on the rally then it will be a fast and exciting contest.” Brookes is the favourite for the four-day Motogard Rally, which ends in Wellington next Tuesday. In the photograph Brookes put his Escort through its paces in the Riverhead Forest.
