Late sport Eagles change spots
NZPA-Reuter Salisbury Rhodesia yesterday beat a visiting American rugby team. 32-15, in a match hailed in the local press as historic. The “Herald” said it was the first time that Rhodesia had met an American team in an international rugby game. Rhodesia, the target of international sanctions, has played only South African teams since the British Barbarians side visited about two years ago. The American side, the
Cougars, came to Salisbury after a series of matches in South Africa. Asked if the Cougars were the United States’ national rugby team, the secretary of the United States Rugby Football Union, Mr Ed Lee, told reporters: “You’re damned right it is. It is the best side we could possibly have gotten together.” He said the national side was usually named the Eagles but political considerations had forced a change of name for the southern Africa tour.
