Planes take provisions to McMurdo
About 1365 kg of mail and 3185 kg of food were delivered to McMurdo Sound yesterday by two United State Navy Hercules transport aircraft. The planes, which also carried 59 personnel who will prepare for the summer season at the Antarctic, took off from Christchurch at 2.45 a.m. and 5 a.m. respectively. They landed at McMurdo Sound about 8| hours later, spent about two hours on the ground, and returned to Christchurch. It is six months since the men spending the winter at McMurdo had received mail or fresh food. Included in the supplies were vegetables, ice-cream and fresh milk.
Several more flights carrying men and freight will go to the Antarctic in the next few weeks as preparations are made for the summer season.
