New air car ferry service

Two specially modified aircraft will soon begin a new inter-island car-transport service. The modified DC4 and DC6 aircraft belonging to Nationwide Air, Ltd, are expected to arrive soon from Singapore. Their cockpits have been moved to the top of their fuselages to enable a front-loading system to be insulted. Each plane can hold up to six average-size cars, and 18 passengers. Nationwide Air, a subsidiary of the Haulaways Corporation, hopes that the new service will begin in October. The modified aircraft, known as Carvairs, will have to be checked by New Zealand officials for airworthiness certificates and approval on other details. The aircraft will be based in Christchurch, where a hangar is being built. The Carvairs will make five or six trips each day except on Sunday. General freight will also be carried. Plans are under way for a third aircraft if the venture proves successful.
