Kentucky Fried fined

PA Dunedin A conviction entered after a dead fly had been found in a pottle of potatoes bought from a Kentucky Fried Chicken shop was the first conviction entered against the company in New Zealand the Magistrate’s Court in Dunedin was told. The company pleaded guilty before Mr J. D. Murray, S.M., to charges of selling food which contained a fly, and failing to keep the premises free of insects at all times.

Appearing for the Health Department, Mr W. J. Wright said that a customer had bought a meal from the Andersons Bay Road premises on April 13, and while eating the potato mixture found a dead fly in the container. As a result of a complaint to the department, the

premises were inspected. It was found that most entrances were properly screened, but that flies could get through the serving hatch and the louvred door. The back door was ajar and the screen on it was jammed open. All ventilation points were properly screened. For the company, Mr S. Wood, of Christchurch, said that this particular store was one of 33 in New Zealand. It

had been opened five years. A million meals had been served from this store and 30M throughout New Zealand. It could be said that this fly was “one in a million meals,” said Mr Wood.

The company maintained strict discipline and standards, and he assured the Court that the problem would not reoccur.

On each of the charges a fine of $3O was imposed.
