Youth soccer squad named
Woolston W.M.C, might not have been as successful as Trans Tours United in the Rothmans Soccer League this season but it has gained one honour that its fellow Christchurch side has failed to achieve.
Two of its players, Colin Chisholm and Stuart Chalmers, have been named in the New Zealand under-19 team to contest the World Youth Cup elimination matches in November. The third Christchurch representative is the Western team’s captain, Adrian Kersten. United had three players in the final training squad but none were included.
Eleven of the squad have had national-league experience and four players — Neil Haines, Clint Gosling, Nigel Debenham and Robbie Tenbroeke — have been included in the full New Zealand team to play in South Korea next month, Chisholm and Chalmers have been among Woolston’s most impressive players this season and fully deserve their selection, as does Ker? sten, who led a youthful Western side to within a few points of promotion to the Rothmans League. The team will train with
its coach (Mr Doug Moore) and its manager (Mr Barrie Trueman) for a week before the elimination tournament begins in Auckland on November 12. New Zealand will meet Australia, Taiwan and Fiji. It it wins this group, it will go on to a second elimination round against South American countries in Argentina early next year. The finals will be in Japan later next year. The squad is. —- Goalkeepers: C. Gosling (Eastern Suburbs), G. Dillistone (Hamilton), Defenders: N. Haines (North Shore), C. Chisholm (Woolston W.M.C.), A. Ivanic, M. Philipsen (Stop Out), R. Fitzgerald (Nelson United), R. Herbert (Mount Wellington). Midfield: S. Chalmers (Woolston), M. Cummins (Miramar Rangers), A. Kersten (Western), N. Debenham (Dunedin City), I. Chicken (Blockhouse Bay). Strikers: R. Tenbroeke (Stop Out), S. Rufer (Seatoun), D. Johnston (Miramar), B. Berry (North End United), M. Reardon (Hamilton).
