Men have 8-0 win over H.B.
PA Masterton Canterbury had a crushing B'-0 win over Hawke’s Bay in the Challenge Shield section of the national men’s hockey tournament at Clareville, Carterton yesterday. The Canterbury forwards passed the ball well in the heavy conditions and had Hawke’s Bay back-pedalling throughout. Canterbury had an indifferent start on Sunday with a 2-0 win over South Canterbury.
The team played well as a unit in good conditions, and dominated throughout, but could not score the goals. The South Canterbury goalie, Dave Stuthridge, played particularly well and denied Canterbury several scoring opportunities. Selwyn Maister scored Canterbury’s first goal from!
a penalty stroke and John Christensen scored the second. The Challenge Shield holders, Auckland, lifted the tempo in its second game. It gave fifth-ranked Wanganui little chance and romped to a 5-0 win. Continuous rain made the Clareville grounds very heavy and tournament officials decided that today’s games would be played at nearby Carrington Park, in Carterton. Results:—
Challenge Shield.—Auckland 5, Wanganui 0; South Canterbury 1. Wairarapa 0; Canterbury 8, Hawke’s Bay 0: Manawatu 4, Nelson 1; Wellington, a bye.
