SMITHFIELD MARKET
The meat trade in England and Wales during the past week has been very slow, reports the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board in its weekly market survey. New Zealand lamb eased slightly on Smithfield during the week. Ip for PM grade, but in the country, where there is a greater throughput, values were significantly stronger with PM’s at 55 to 56p. During the past two weeks many independent butchers have moved over to home-killed lambs 5 which are now only 3 to 4p dearer than the New Zealand product. MANUFACTURING BEEF There was a stronger trend in the United States manufacturing beef market
last week, although buyers were reluctant to cover supplies too far ahead. End users showed a greater interest in New Zealand cow-beef which traded at 87.5 US cents per lb, C.I.F. 3c higher than last week. MUTTON The Japanese mutton market was quiet again last week after the disruption of the foreign exchange market. Several small parcels of New Zealand MM grade mutton have been sold around 49 US cents per lb, C and F Japan, some for prompt, but mainly for October shipment.
