Kirkness on form
Canterbury’s top billiards player, Brian Kirkness, was in spectacular form when he added to his haul of titles by winning the provincial open championship yesterday. Kirkness. with breaks of 188, 84, 85, and 70, scored a clear cut 771-447 victory over Eric Simons in the two hour final. However, it was in the semifinals that Kirkness was at his brilliant best. His total of 1044, In beating Dick O’Callaghan, who reached 273, is a new New Zealand record for a two hour session, beating the previous highest of 945 credited to Tim Bickerstaff (Auckland) and Klrkness’a top break of 326 beats his own national record of 289.
Furthermore. Kirkness hid another break, of 208 and this is almost certainly the first time a
triple century and a double century return have been coupled in the space of two hours. Kirkness’s other high breaks in this game were two 84s. In the second semi-final Simons, with a top break, of 137, beat Ken Giles, 726-443. The tournament, held for the first timo this year drew 29 entries.
