Table tennis to N.I.
PA Napier. The North Island comfortably won the annual inter-island table tennis competition last night. The North Island team of James Morris (Northland), Richard Lee (Auckland), Robert Blair (Franklin) and Kerry Palmer (Auckland) beat their South Island counterparts. 10-2. The North Island women’s team,. Angela Brackenridge (Auckland), Sherry Palmer (Auckland), Christine Beasley (Wellington) and Ruth Lee (Hutt Valley), won their contest, 8-4. The only major upset of the night was when Maurice Burrowes (Canterbury) beat Blair in straight sets. The South Island women’s team included 12-year-old Wendy Cuthbert (Otago), the youngest person ever to play in the event. She lost all her matches but earlier in the day took four titles in the under 14 and under 16 national championships.
