New interest in abortion posts
PA Auckland Amendments to the abortion law have led to more doctors applying for certify-ing-consultancy positions.
The Abortion Supervisory Committee, which appoints consultants, did not have enough applicants when the new law came into effect on April 1 but this has changed since the amendments were passed in July.
The chairman of the committee (Mrs G. C. P. A. Wallace, S.M.) said that since the law had been
i changed a number of doctors had applied. The committee will meet tomorrow to consider these applications and an application from the Medical Aid Trust for a licence to perform abortions. The committee has reinvited the 5500 doctors in New Zealand to apply to beco m e abortion-certifying consultants. When it did so earlier this year it received; only 150 applications and; appointed about 140 con-; suitants.
