Trampers lost on Egmont
PA New Plymouth Four Wellington trampers are lost on Mount Egmont after a climb to. the summit. Last evening, the police and search and rescue volunteers were still combing the lower north-eastern slopes for the party. The trampers are Robert Hendry, aged 28, of Chart-; well, Wellington, Kerrie Sawtell, aged 20, Neil Parker, aged 21, and William O’Kane, aged 20, all of Lower Hutt. Conditions on the mountain were described bv the police as atrocious. Although the men are all experienced trampers, they were equipped only for a day trip. They were members of a , party of 22 from the Upper Hutt Tramping Club which made a day trip to the summit and were expected back at the Tahurangi Lodge on North Egmont about 3 p.m. yesterday. The four missing men were in pairs. They were last seen! on the summit at 1 p.m. Four rescue parties comprising 20 men set out to search the area at about 6 p.m. Another 1 50 search and rescue helpers were on stand- 1 by earlv this morning, and! will join the search at daylight if the men have not been found.
