Crook gift to bishop
London correspondent A silver-mounted shepherd’s crook was presented to the Bishop of Dunedin (the Rt Rev. P. W. Mann) when he visited Chiddingfold, in Surrey, last week. Chiddingfold has sent a total of about 1500 shepherd's crooks to the South Island — mostly to Otago and Canterbury. According to the vicar of the village (the Rev. J. G. Nicholls) who is a friend of Bishop Mann: “We just felt that the chief shepherd of Otago should also have a crook, to be used as a pastoral staff.” “The Dunedin peel” was played by the church’s bellringers, and was instantly recognised by Bishop Mann as the peel used in Queenstown last year when the new vicar was inducted. It had been recorded in Chiddingfold and sent to Queenstown, where Mr Nicholls spent several months as priest in charge.
