Accused to give $l00
PA Wellington A junior university lecturer who was arrested in possession of cannabis had not discharged his obligations to his students, the Magistrate’s Court at Wellington heard on Friday. - Lee Grant Smith, aged 27, a junior university lecturer in Maori studies, pleaded guilty before Mr M. F. Hobbs, S.M., to possessing cannabis leaf in July. He was represented by Mr D. Rangihuna. “A man who is a lecturer at university is in a position of considerable influence over his students and in that way he has not discharged his obligation,” the Magistrate said in remanding Smith to September 1 to enable him to give $lOO to the National Society on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. If the donation were made the Court would consider discharging ■ the defendant, under section 42 of the Criminal Justice Act, without conviction, the Magistrate said.
