Hockey Pegasus keeps its hopes flying in senior contest
Only three of the four games ( scheduled in the senior men’s hockey secondary competition. were played on Saturday; the match between Sydenham and’ Bedcliffs M as postponed because I of the poor ground conditions at Sydenham Park. There were no upsets, but] .Pegasus kept its hopes of a good' placing alive when it beat Sei-! wyn-Hillmorton B 3-t in section 11. The five teams in each section will play a round-robin competi-l ticn. and the winners of each: section will meet for the Athol! McCrorie Trophy. University had a good win aga nst Unwood United on Sat-j vrday. It won 3-0 with seven of] its regular players absent. Six of these players are in the Canter-I bury team at the national cham-i pionship at Masterton. Selwvn-Hlllmorton, In spite of the loss of its two accomplished f > -wards. George Carnoustos and 3?ark Burtt, had a comfortable v in against Woolston Working Men’s Club. <ter two weeks of the competition, University is the onlv side with two veins, but it has yet to meet the two stronger t«3ms in the section. SELWYN, COMFORTABLY Selwyn and Woolston had to battle a muddy ground at Garrick Park. It made good hockey almost impossible, although to their credit both sides attempted to control the ball. Selwyn scored first halfway through the first spell after Patrick Hayde and David Clements combined in a good move, completed by Craig Burtt. Woolston lacked the same control, but its deep passes made life difficult for the Selwyn defence, who found it hard to turn and cover on the wet surface. Eventually, after one such attack, Peter Warriner scored from a penalty-corner. Selwyn improved after the Woolston goal and it soon dominated the game. It forced a series of penaltv-corners, and finally
Jeff Pepper scored from one of these.
In the Woolston defence, the imperturbable Tom Brennan played soundly, breaking up many Selwyn attacks. He was given good support by Gary Jones, but the Selwyn pressure was too great and its third goal I came from a penalty-stroke, also scored bv Pepper. UNIVERSITY TRIUMPH University produced a commendale performance from a makeshift team to beat Linwood. which was near normal strength. It was a case of University’s teamwork triumphing over a Linwood side which had difficulty findfng a combination among its forwards. Two of University’s goals came from penalty strokes, by John Woods and Greg Pierce, and the third was scored by Simon Agar after Graham Warburton made a good run. The final score was convincing, but University did not dominate completely. Roy Parry and Graeme Williams in the Linwood forward line made good runs, but could not score. On defence, John Whitford and Henry Singh tackled and passed competently against the University attack well led by Neil Edmundson on the right wing. Pierce took over the role of
centre-half for University, and handled things admirably.
PEGASUS SPIRIT A spirited display by Pegasus against Selwyn-Hlllmorton B has left it deservedlv leading the second section. It showed the fine teamwork which it has been building throughout the season although it still has to meet High School Old Boys and Redcliffs, the two strong teams.
Selwyn scored first, through Richard Schoeman halfwaythrough the first spell, and an upset was a prospect. But Pegasus tightened its defence and the forwards injected more fire into their play and minutes before the interval Ivan Thomson equalised.
Paul Gardiner, who has developed steadily 8S a forward during the season, scored two splendid goals in the second half to give Pegasus a 3-1 lead. This proved too much for Selwyn, but with its comfortable lead Pegasus became a little lax and allowed Selwyn to fight back and eventually Barry Moore scored. Pegasus tightened its rearguard though, and held off several Selwyn attacks late in the game.
