Another win for Avenger
NZPA Melbourne New Zealander Avenger made it two wins from three starts since coming to Australia by winning the BeUhaven Handicap at Sandown on Saturday. And the way he carried his 57kg on a heavy track suggest* he wUI take a lot of beating in the Ascot Vale Stakes at Flemington when he ha* his next start. The track, heavy from about 12mm of rain, this week, was made even heavier by a cloudburst before the running of the race. As an indication of the heaviness of the track Avenger took 1:21.5 for the 1200 m which is almost 11 seconds outside the record. Jockey Brian Andrews was content to keep Avenger close to the rails throughout, and when the leaders shifted out at the home turn Andrews speared through and quickly took control of the race. Little could be said for th* horses he beat although Madison. 33-1, continued to show improvement and ran home strongly to get second just ahead of The Downs, which had shared the lead until the top of the straight.
