Services for missing
PA Invercargill At least 1000 people are expected to meet in Riversdale today for a memorial service for the four northern Southland men missing in Fiordland since August 16. A Cessna 180 aircraft, piloted by the Rev. Syril Crosbie, of Riversdale, disappeared on a flight from Big Bay to Riversdale. The other men aboard the aircraft were Messrs Trevor Collins, Peter Robertson and Grant Sutherland, who were also from the Riversdale area. The combined service for the men will be held in the Riversdale Community Centre at 2 p.m. and is expected to draw more than
1000 people from Riversdale and the surrounding district, according to the Rev. M. Cashman, of Riversdale. “I think the whole community will be there.” Father Cashman said last evening. After the Riversdale service Mass will be celebrated at 3 p.m. in the Roman Catholic Church at Gore. It will be celebrated by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Dunedin (the Most Rev. J. P. Kavanagh) and Father Cashman said priests from throughout New Zealand would be present. Today’s search will depend on the clearing of rain and low cloud which covered most of the area yesterday afternoon.
