Career in survey
John Maxwell Grant, Chief Surveyor of the Canterbury Land District from 1960 to 1966, died at his home in Christchurch recently. He was 72. Mr Grant was bom in New Plymouth and educated in Gisborne. After joing the Lands and Survey Department in 1923, he worked in Hokitika, Christchurch, and Wellington before his appointment as staff surveyor at Nelson in 1931. He returned to Christchurch in 1945, until ap-
pointed Chief Surveyor in Blenheim in 1955. He was subsequently Chief Surveyor in New Plymouth (1957-1960), and Christchurch.
Mr Grant was a former chairman of the Canterbury branch of the Institute of Public Administration and an elder of the St Albans Presbyterian church. He was a keen member of both the Elmwood Bowling Club and Cockfords’ Bridge Club. Mr Grant is survived by his wife and two children.
