Sir, — We wish to express our alarm over the Government’s refusal to allow Mr Horta, the Fretilin leader visiting New Zealand soon, to speak publicly on his country’s plight. Is it not our right to have the opportunity to hear and decide for ourselves the validity of his case? Mr Horta is only one. How many other causes of vital interest to concerned New Zealanders will be successfully silenced by the Government? It poses a very serious question. Do we have the courage to allow freedom of speech not only for our own but also the nationals of other countries, many oppressive in their reaction to free speech; or do we succumb and obsequiously allow the short list of free speaking countries to shrink by one more? — Yours, etc., G. T. AND G. N. DEANS, Darfield. August 23, 1978.
