Applicants should be physically fit and of 16 to 18 years of age. It is preferred that applicants have three years secondary education and a strong outdoor interest. TRAINING: Training commences in January each year at one of the five training schools located at Aupouri near Kaitaia, Kaingaroa near Rotorua, Golden Downs near Nelson, Ashley near Rangiora and Berwick near Dunedin. The training period is for three years, two years at a school and one year on forests. The training is arranged to provide a complete rotation of essential jobs to develop practical skills. Following training, woodsmen are transferred for further experience to Forest Service locations throughout New Zealand and receive additional technical and supervisory training by attending short courses at the Forestry Training Centre.
