Fire kills two men, 40 horses
A groom, a blacksmith and 40 racehorses died when fire swept through the barn at Herve Filion’s Capital Hill Farms, New Jersey, early this month. Among the horses was the Australian-bred speedster, Mister Karamea, which created an Australian and New Zealand record for a two-year-old when he paced one mile against time at Gloucester Park, Perth in Imin 58.6 sec in May, 1975. Along with five other horses lost in the fire, Mister Karamea was to have raced at Roosevelt Raceway the night after the fire.
