YOGA - THE LOTUS

The final position in our series on yoga is the Lotus. It is named after the beautiful lotus flower and is the classic position for meditation. The Lotus has been practised by people in

India for thousands of years. It calms the mind and is a pose to take when you want to concentrate and think deeply. The Lotus also enables you to sit on the floor comfortably for a long time without falling over because the legs are locked in position without muscular effort. 1. Sit down and stretch your left leg out in front of you. Bend your right knee and pick up your right foot and place it on the opposite thigh. Your heel should be close to your navel. 2. Bend your left knee and, picking up your left foot, place it over your right thigh in the same position. The soles of your feet must be turned up. 3. Straighten your spine and place your hands on your knees. 4. Now change your leg oosition so that your right foot comes over your left. Do not worry if you cannot achieve this pose the first time. Practise quietly and do not strain your legs or knee joints. Once your knees and ankles are supple, you will enjoy this pose and be able to hold it with ease.
