Three strips

Readers of an article on early landings at Mount Cook which appeared on this page on July 12 may not have realised that there are three airfields a’. Mount Cook. The original airstrip formed in the 1930 s is known today as the Birch Hill strip. The nearby, sealed strip formed in the early 1960 s and used today by the Mount Cook Company for all its scheduled and scenic flights, was first caled the Tasman strip but is known now as Mount Cook Airport. A third strip, some miles away on the flats of the Hooker River in front of the Hermitage, is known as the Hermitage strip. It is rarely used today.
