Student upsets chess
, Giles Bates, a member of the Christchurch Boys’ High School B team which finished second in “The Press” schools’ tournament last week, scored an upset win against the defending champion, Roger Nokes, in the first round of the South Island chess championship yesterday. First round results (players from Canterbury unless stated otherwise) were:— B. R. Anderson beat D. Boyee (Nelson), Bates beat Nokes, J. Jackson beat R. V’Tsteen (Otago), W. Gibson v. T. Van Dijk (Nelson), adjourned; R. Perry Otago) beat K. Perry (Otago), M. Watson (Auckland) lost to A. Love (Otago), C. Baker lost to M. White (Otago), M. Morrison (Auckland) v. P. Mataga (Auckland), adjourned; M. Foord (Otago) beat D. Bunn (Nelson), D. Pomeroy (Auckland) v. W. A. Norton, adjourned; M. Freeman beat N. Cole, D. Weegenaar (Otago) drew with M. Livingston (Auckland), T. Spiller (Wellington) beat B. Gloistein, R. Freeman drew with P. Austin (Auckland), Mrs E. Bowler (Timaru) lost to D. J. Cairns, K. Mackley beat D. Borrell, M. Priest v. A. Lloyd, adjourned.
