Textile chances in America

PA Wellington The United States offers “excellent opportunities” for New Zealand clothing and textile manufacturers according to a report released yesterday by the Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Taiboys). But, the report said, potential exporters needed to “do their homework fully” before attempting to enter the very competitive market. The report said that perseverance, enthusiasm, personal contacts, strict quality control and “impeccable” I deliveries were essential if the export effort were to be successful.

Copies of the report prepared by the Governmentsponsored export opportunity team were now available to New Zealand industry through the Department of Trade and Industry, Mr Talboys said. It was prepared by a team of five industry representatives and an official from the department which spent two weeks surveying the United States market

Members visited five big American cities and met retailers, importers, agents, bankers and airline representatives.

Their report concentrated mainly on clothing and textiles but also studied trade promotion, freight services and the United States Government’s regulations, Mr Taiboys said. “Hie report will be of considerable benefit to a number of companies exhibiting at the New Zealand trade exhibition in Los Angeles in October,” he said. “It should be compulsory reading for all prospective exporters of apparel and textile goods who are considering tackling the vast United States market”
