Aust, abortions ‘cost $½ 2 M’
PA Auckland Tbe Sisters Overseas Service group has sent 1078 Auckland women to Australia for abortions since the Aotea Hospital closed last December. The group estimates the total cost of the overseas abortions to be “a minimum of $500,000.” Speaking for the 5.0.5., Mrs Barbara Goodman said the cost was calculated on an average of $5OO a head. Clinic fees were esti-
mated at $lOO,OOO, New Zealand travel tax at $32,000, airport tax at $2OOO, and airline tickets at $352,000. Mrs Goodman, the Auckland regional co-ordinator for the Repeal organisation, said that since the new abortion law started on April 1, 487 women had been sent from Auckland. “If you double the 1000, you get a very conservative estimate of the numbers of nomen going from all over the country,” she said.
